We have continued our learning about teen numbers this week in Year 1. The children have been refining their knowledge of partitioning and problem solving to identify missing numbers in an equation.

In Maths last week, Year 1 were investigating 'teen numbers'. The children looked at what numbers they are made of by partitioning and combining them and understanding how their names are made.

Year 1 have had lots of fun during their Number Day celebrations. We started with art using paint, loose parts, Lego and pens to create symmetrical artwork. They then had to work systematically to solve the problem of scarves and hats for the penguin from our story Lost and Found. Finally they finished off their morning with number and movements - following instructions to move in different ways for a set number of times!

Y5 have had a great Numbers day! They explored patterns in timetables and made some interesting discoveries; they developed their measuring skills by accurately measuring their arm lengths and displaying this data on bar graphs. They also used their problem solving skills to find a key code to escape a problem solving challenge!

For Numbers Day, children in year 4 explored the work of Italian artist Tobia Rava, who creates artwork using numbers. Inspired by his style and our class text The Ice Palace, children designed their own skeletal trees. They then filled their designs with numbers to combine maths and art in a creative way. Y5 have started their new topic fractions this week. They have revised prior learning of unit fractions and how to find fractions of amounts and began to look at equivalent fractions.

Year 1 have been busy over the last 2 weeks exploring and investigating number bonds to 10 and 20. They have consolidated their knowledge of the bonds through using resources, using rhymes and noticing patterns.

Y5 have worked really hard this week developing their rounding whole number skills. Next week - decimals!

In maths this week, the children have been investigating weight using balance scales. They have described objects by using the words heavier and lighter. They then recorded their ideas using the sentence stems.

Y5 have enjoyed developing their geometry skills practicing coordinates, translation and finding lines of symmetry. They also used these skills to create some lovely Christmas art!

This week in maths, the children in Year 1 have been using first, then and now stories to explore subtraction. They have used concrete resources and recording grids to support their understanding of the methods.

Last week, we held our first maths workshop for year 1 parents. We had a fantastic attendance and the children and their parents were very busy exploring a variety of different resources and games to support the learning and recall of number bonds to 10. The children really enjoyed spending time with their parents learning together.

Y5 have been working really hard on long multiplication. We are really proud of them - 4 digits next!

Year 1 have continued their exploration of odd and even numbers in maths this week. They have explored how odd and even numbers can be partitioned and if there are any rules and patterns to how they can be partitioned.

The children in Year 1 have been busy learning about Bessie Coleman and Mae Jemison who are two inspirational black woman who conquered their dreams to fly. The children learnt about their life journeys, and then compared how they were similar and different before recreating Bessie's plane and capturing Mae Jemison in space through art work.

Y5 have worked hard at improving their addition skills. Next we will be looking at addition in context through different word and reasoning problems.

Reception buried dominoes in the sand and then worked together to dig up the dominoes, looking for the number 5. We counted using 1:1...

Y5 have been working really hard on their place value up to 1,000,000!
