The International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
At West Park Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum alongside the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to provide children with an engaging, meaningful and connected learning experience.

The IPC is a thematic, cross-curricular approach to learning. It enables children to make meaningful links between different subjects while developing the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed.

Children learn through carefully planned units based around a theme. Within a unit, children explore different areas of the curriculum, which may include History, Geography, Science, Art, Design, Technology and Innovation, Music, PE and Health and Wellbeing, Computing and International Learning.

Where meaningful connections can be made, subjects are taught together so that children can see how their learning links across the curriculum. Subjects are also taught separately when this is the most effective way for children to develop secure subject knowledge and skills.

Each IPC unit begins with an Entry Point designed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm. Children then explore what they already know before taking part in a sequence of learning activities that build their knowledge and understanding. At the end of the unit, children have opportunities to reflect on, celebrate and share their learning with parents or their peers.

The IPC is about more than learning facts. It encourages children to become curious, confident and independent learners who can ask questions, investigate ideas, solve problems and reflect on their learning.

An important part of the IPC is also helping children develop an international perspective. Children learn about their own community and culture while exploring different places, people and cultures around the world. This helps them develop respect for others and an understanding of the wider world.

At West Park, our IPC units are carefully planned to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and the needs of our children. Teachers ensure that learning is ambitious, progressive and builds on what children already know.

Through the IPC, we aim to make learning memorable, purposeful and exciting, while ensuring that children develop the strong subject knowledge and skills they need for the next stage of their education.
At the heart of the IPC are the West Park Learning Goals. These set out what children should know, understand and be able to do at different stages of their primary education.

The Learning Goals help teachers plan learning that is appropriately challenging and ensure that children's knowledge and skills develop progressively as they move through school.

The IPC Learning Goals are organised into two areas:
Subject Learning Goals focus on the knowledge, skills and understanding children develop within individual subjects.

Personal Learning Goals support children in developing the personal qualities they need to become successful learners.

These Learning Goals ensure that each unit has a clear purpose and contributes to children's long-term development, knowledge and understanding.
